That damp, musty smell after a wet Sydney week is common — and it’s a sign that moisture has got somewhere it shouldn’t. The good news is it’s usually fixable. Here’s what causes it and what to do.
Why cars smell musty after rain
A musty smell almost always comes from moisture trapped inside the cabin. Common causes:
- Wet shoes and umbrellas soaking into the floor mats and carpet underneath
- Windows or the sunroof left slightly open during a downpour
- Blocked drains — sunroofs and the area under the windscreen have drain channels that can clog with leaves
- Worn door or boot seals letting water seep in
- The air conditioning system — moisture can collect around the evaporator if the system is always on recirculate
Once moisture sits in carpet or foam, it doesn’t dry quickly in a closed car, and that’s when the smell starts.
Find where it’s coming from
Before cleaning, check:
- Lift the floor mats and press the carpet underneath — is it damp?
- Check the boot, including under the floor panel where the spare wheel sits
- Look for water marks on the headlining, door cards or around the sunroof
- Smell the vents — if the odour is strongest when the fan comes on, it’s likely the air-con system
If you find standing water or a leak, have it fixed first. Cleaning won’t last if water keeps getting in.
How to get rid of the smell
Dry it out
Take out the floor mats and let them dry in the sun. Open the doors on a warm, dry day, or run the air-con on fresh air (not recirculate) for a while.
Clean what’s absorbed it
Once a smell has soaked into carpet and seats, air fresheners only mask it. To remove the cause, the fabric needs to be properly cleaned:
- Seats and carpet stained or smelly? Our Shampoo Wash Specialist shampoos the seats and floor, and includes a Deluxe Hand Car Wash. Individual seats can be done on their own too.
- Just the mats and touch surfaces? A Mini Detail includes a shampoo of all the mats and an upholstery clean of the dashboard, console and doors.
- The whole car? A Full Detail includes steam-cleaned carpets.
Prevent it coming back
- Shake off umbrellas and wet shoes before getting in
- Use rubber mats in winter
- Keep sunroof and windscreen drains clear of leaves
- Run the air-con on fresh air regularly
